Let us show you how to get your containerized clematis ready for another productive year. We can fix this!
Spring arrives with questions: how much should I prune back a clematis in a container? Is it time to replant it completely, and if yes, what are the steps? How do I fertilize and refresh the clematis for spring? All of these questions will be answered in this demonstration class with clematis curator Linda Beutler. This class covers clematis already planted in containers. There will be another class later in the spring about potting up a new clematis in a new planter. Comparison plant suggestions for clematis in containers will be discussed in both classes (selection, when to replace, adding new plants to an old container).

Wim Snoeijer from The Netherlands will do a presentation about Clematis Cultivar Groups. There have been many classifications proposed and published since the book The Clematis as a Garden Flower by Moore & Jackman in 1872. Wim will briefly address the history of classification for clarity. The main focus of his talk is to explain the Clematis Cultivar Groups that he developed and applied throughout his Clematis career, using the key he created. Wim suggests that the two-page key would be useful for attendees to have on hand during the lecture. It can be downloaded at:
https://www.clematisinternational.com/260125-wim-snoeijer-clematis-cultivar-groups-key.pdf
Wim’s 35 years of experience in breeding clematis began in Boskoop using the clematis collection of Jan Fopma and continued while he was working as a clematis breeder at J. van Zoest B.V. nursery. Through crossbreeding clematis, he learned the relationships between plants and between groups of related plants and developed his Clematis Cultivar Group Classification system.

In 2025 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of breaking ground at the Rogerson Clematis Garden.
The last Member Event of the year coincides with Closing Day on the Sales Terrace. Members have access to the Terrace from 9:00-10:00 AM, then FRCC Curator Linda Beutler will cover the sad year of COVID when the garden withstood the absence of an audience, as well as the heat dome and smoke events of 2021. The 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of the collection happened anyway, and plans for the grand entry and driveway reorganization were realized.
There is a break between the morning program and the afternoon festivities. Perhaps go out for lunch or visit the Sales Terrace for more clematis shopping. The Terrace closes for the season at 2:00 PM.
From 2:00-4:00 PM, Linda will lead a garden tour, which will be a curator's eye view of the successes and failures of the garden over the last 20 years, followed by a 20th anniversary party. With Linda as host, you can be sure of tasty treats!
RSVP for this event now! We need an accurate headcount to plan for the refreshments!
